An EU accession of Iceland would have consequences for the stability of the European Economic Area (EEC ). As a member of the EEC Iceland had been the duty of the EU to adopt legislation, but was not directly involved in the legislative process. At the same time it could benefit from the free movement of goods and persons. The Swiss news portal Bazon line writes that such a move could encourage other non-EU members like Norway and Switzerland to reconsider an EU accession. The portal writes that the EU would be a candidate mainly because of Iceland's proximity to the Arctic important where huge oil reserves are suspected.
